Australia's Healthcare System |
The health care system in Australia is divided into the public and private health sectors. |
All public health care in Australia (ie. Medicare and Health Care Card scheme) is subsidised by the Australian Government. Medicare is the public branch of the health system that is available to all Australian citizens, residents and working visa holders. Hospital services are free under this scheme, however visits to general practitioners may incur a small fee. |
While emergency surgery is prioritised under this scheme, long waiting periods may be experienced in instances where surgery is not considered to be of an urgent nature./td>

The private health care system is a way of avoiding long waiting queues for all procedures including elective (non-urgent) surgery. Private health insurance can be expensive and therefore enquiries should be made to ensure that the most appropriate cover is found. |
