Australian Registered Migration Agents that do not have proficient level English |
The Department of Immigration has recently announced that all Australian Registered Migration Agents must undertake an English language proficiency test (i.e. IELTS exam) in order to demonstrate that they have proficient level English. This is in response to the Department's findings that there is a large, and increasing number of registered Agents that do not have sufficient English skills in order to read and properly interpret current legislation and policy changes surrounding immigration practices in Australia. |
Unfortunately, the Department has allowed Agents until 2011 to satisfy the English language requirement and therefore it is expected that a large number of applicants will continue to fall victim to Agents who charge large fees for what is often incorrect and/ or inaccurate advice. In an effort to try and help you avoid this potential problem, the Australian Migration Advisory suggests the following safety measures: |
Insist that the Agent communicates (speaking and writing) with you in English so that you can properly assess their English language ability; |
If you are not comfortable communicating in English, make sure that you ask a friend who does have proficient level English to accompany you to your initial Agent appointment; |
Do not personally fill any forms relating to your application. You should insist that the Agent complete all forms including health forms, as well as applications for character clearances and skills assessments; |
Insist that the Agent provides all instructions in writing. |
